1^STE COAST-TO-COAST IN AUSTRALIE, VAN PERTH NAAR SYDNEY

Zaterdag 18/3/2017, dag 1: Freemantle – Coolgardie, 604 km

Het voordeel van een ochtendstart is dat je nog een laatste keer kan genieten van een normale nachtrust vooraleer de hel losbreekt. In Perth regent het ongeveer 13 dagen per jaar, rara welk weer het was bij de start aan de vuurtoren…☹ Omdat ik me redelijk laat aanmeldde mocht ik achteraan aanschuiven. Na het startschot en alle commotie die daarmee gepaard gaat kon ik uiteindelijk als allerlaatste op mijn gemak vertrekken naar de andere kant van Australië, een tripje van 5.400 kilometer.

Het begin van zo’n race is altijd wat chaotisch en ook nu duurde het weer een tijdje voor alles wat in zijn plooi viel. Maar na een uur kon ik letterlijk rustig en alleen beginnen fietsen.

Day 1: Freemantle – Coolgardie 604 km

The advantage of an early start is that you are able to enjoy a normal sleep before the hell begins. It only rains about 13 days a year in Perth, guess what the weather was like initially near the lighthouse…
As I arrived fairly late at the start, I had to put myself at the end of the line. I departed as last one for the other side of Australia, a small trip of 5400 kilometres.

The departure of such events is often chaotic and it was this time, it takes some time before everything normalizes. After an hour, I could start to cycle alone and in peace.
Soon after the start I got acquainted with the Australian reality, outside the towns and villages there is literally nothing. The only distraction is to cycle for several kilometres on gravel roads because of the road works. For the remainder of this first day the goal is mainly to cover kilometres and not to waste time with futilities.

At noon I buy a sandwich at a gas station and here the tone is set for the other refuelling service stations during the rest of the race: each time a sandwich, chocolate and some other junk …

Samedi 18/3/2017 jour 1: Freemantle – Coolgardie 604 km

L’avantage d’un départ matinal est de pouvoir profiter une dernière fois d’un sommeil normal avant que l’enfer commence. Il ne pleut que 13 jours par an à Perth, devinez quel temps il faisait au départ près du phare…

Comme je m’étais présenté assez tardivement au départ, il a fallu que je me mette à la queue de la file. Je prenais comme tout dernier le départ vers l’autre côté de l’Australie, une petite sortie de 5400 kilomètres.

Le départ de tels événements est souvent chaotique et maintenant aussi, il faut un certain temps avant que tout se normalise. Après une heure, je pouvais commencer à rouler seul et dans le calme.

•  Eén rit, de klok stopt nooit, als renners kies je  waar en wanneer ze enige rust neemt.
• Geen enkele vorm van ondersteuning is toegelaten: je gebruikt alleen wat je kan meenemen of wat je onderweg koopt.
• Je bepaalt zelf je route en onderweg zijn er 4 controleplaatsen waar je langs moet.

De sfeer bij de start was buitengewoon en dat kwam natuurlijk door het grote aantal deelnemers én supporters. De eerste kilometers verliepen dan ook wat chaotisch en het was pas heel wat later, toen ik letterlijk alleen aan het rijden was dat ik me echt kon concentreren op het fietsen. De eerste nachtelijke uren was ik op gekend terrein. Ik kon dus een mooie progressie maken en ook daarna kon ik de haltes om te eten of voor wat dan ook tot een minimum beperken. Tegen de avond,  ik was op zowat 20 km van Check Point 1: Clermont-Ferrand, leek het verdacht dat ik de Puy de Dôme nog niet zag. Hoe dat kwam werd al snel duidelijk: een enorme regenbui waar je liever niet in belandt… Na een paar minuten stond er letterlijk 5 cm water op de weg en er leek niet meteen beterschap op komst. Ik wachtte een kwartiertje onder een brug maar daar was het bijna even erg, zodat gewoon verder fietsen de meest logische oplossing was. Pas na het openbreken van het wolkendek zag ik CP1 liggen. Even voor 22 uur passeerde ik de controle in Clermont-Ferrand en om 23.23 uur kreeg ik mijn stempel op de Col de Ceyssat, één van de verplichte cols. Ik was dus bijna 26 uur onderweg geweest voor 670KM, bijna non-stop, er moest natuurlijk gedoseerd worden want de weg was nog lang… tijd dus voor wat rust.                                                                                                                                            Hotels genoeg in Clermont-Ferrand, ik kon niet weerstaan aan de verleiding om er één uit te kiezen waar ik dan een 3-tal uur ging slapen.

2016 Transcontinental Race (fr) 8D/15H/02M

Au départ, l’ambiance était extraordinaire grâce aux nombreux participants et supporters. Les premiers kilomètres étaient chaotiques, ce n’est que quand j’étais vraiment seul que j’ai pu me concentrer sur le vélo. Pendant les premières heures nocturnes, je me trouvais en terre connue. Cela me permettait de réaliser une belle progression, même après je pouvais limiter au strict minimum les arrêts “manger” ou autres. Le soir, à peu près 20 km du Point Contrôle 1 : Clermont-Ferrand, je trouvais suspect de ne pas apercevoir le Puy de Dôme. Très vite l’explication est trouvée : une énorme averse que l’on souhaite éviter à tout prix… Après deux minutes la chaussée se trouvait 5 cm sous eau et sans aucun signe d’amélioration en vue. Je patientais un quart d’heure sous un pont, mais il y faisait aussi mauvais que finalement continuer à vélo s’avérait la meilleure solution. Une fois les gros nuages disparus, je vois le PC 1. Peu avant 22 heures je passais au contrôle à Clermont-Ferrand et à 23 heures 23 je recevais mon tampon sur le Col de Ceyssat, un des cols obligatoires. 26 heures de route pour 670 km, presque non-stop. Il va falloir doser, car le chemin est encore long. Il est temps de se reposer. Assez d’hôtels à Clermont-Ferrand, je ne pouvais résister à la tentation d’en choisir un pour y dormir 3 heures.

2016 Transcontinental race (EN) 8D/15H/02M

• One stage, the clock never stops, racers choose where and when to rest.
• No support allowed.  The racer uses only when they take with them,
   or what they can buy along the way from ordinary shops.
• The participant chooses their own route and along the way there are 4 mandatory control points.

The atmosphere at the start was amazing thanks to the large number of participants and supporters.  The first kilometres were chaotic but later, when I was alone, I was able to concentrate and focus on riding.  During the first hours the territory was familiar allowing me to make strong progress, keeping the stops to eat or whatever to a minimum.

Training is done, bike is ready, clothes are washed and smell nice (for the moment).

I am riding a custom stalen Jaegher Ascender, with mechanical Campagnolo Record, SWS Wheels RCA22 & RCA27 Elite Aero, Continental GP4000S tires and Super Nova lighting, usually also an appidura saddlebag … but he’s now traveling in the car behind me ;).
